TRAVELLING

"White list" of airlines

It consists in a list of foreign airlines that have been tested by the Italian Aviation Authority (ENAC) with a positive result. The check has taken place in the course of the SAFA programme (Safety Assessment of Foreign Aircraft) which allows controls related to the documentation of the airplane, to the operator and the staff, as well as to the conditions of the aeroplane that crosses the Italian territory.
Within 2006 all the companies will have been tested; therefore the list is constantly updated and the momentary absence of an operator doesn’t necessarily stand for a negative result: it could be that it is one of the companies that haven’t been tested yet.
The list is, even if only to a certain extent, a help for the consumer in the choice of an airline. For more information and the list see www.enac-italia.it/documents/NumeroVerde/introduzione.htm

PRODUCT SAFETY

"EU-China Memorandum of Understanding"

Representing 8.8% of global commerce, China is the second commercial partner for the EU. Mainly food products, electronic and household appliances, toys as well as clothes are imported from China every year. The memorandum, signed in November, is a volunteer declaration between legislators of product safety and aims to promote measures to guarantee it. It implies also mechanisms of cooperation and consulting in order to achieve a unitary vision concerning security standards.

BROCHURE

Olympic Games Turin 2006

From February 10th to 26th, the XX Olympic Winter Games will be held in Turin. In the same way as the Greek colleagues of the ECC Athens did, also the ECC Italy has tried to collect useful information for “Olympic tourists” from all over Europe.
The information offer ranges from hotel and restaurant prices to transport fees as well as a list of useful telephone numbers. Just have a look at it!

CASE OF THE MONTH

It should have been a romantic holiday week in which Mr and Mrs Voyager wanted to enjoy and relax themselves. The destination of the trip was Dubai. As the selected hotel, which promised marvellous holidays, was overbooked, the consumers trusted the advice of the travel agency and booked a relaxing week in another hotel.
However, it was not possible to talk about relax or romantic atmosphere as the caterpillars were too loud, the cranes too ugly and the beaches too tarry.
After that the consumer and the European Consumer Centre had tried in the beginning to solve the affair in writing and the proposal to find a mediation through the Chamber of National and International Arbitration of Milan (a special body of the Chamber of Commerce of Milan) had been refused by the travel agency, it has finally been accorded to meet around a table at the ECC for a clarifying talk.
At this meeting it was possible to find an acceptable compromise between the two parties to conclude the affair. This shows, once more, that there are several possibilities to solve a problem, which can lead to a satisfying result.
