DG Monti: increased consumer protection

The EU-Commission has now appointed a contact officer for consumers. It is an important step and gives more importance to the consumer towards powerful groups. Juan Riviere y Marti is not only the contact for Europe’s consumer organazations but also for single consumers. Moreover, he informs consumer groups about cases of competition, where they can make a useful contribution to its treatment. In the end, the contact officer has the task to discuss with the competition authorities about questions of consumer protection.
The consumers can pose questions related to competition issues by filling in the contact form on the homepage of the DG Competition.

TRAVELS

Passport: stamp duty yes or no?

The concession charge for the passport is only necessary for travels outside the European Union.
Therefore you can travel peacefully to all the countries of the European Union with a valid passport without providing it every year with the apposite stamp.

New post charges since 2004

Since 1.1.2004, it is no more possible to send a letter to another European country simply franked (posta ordinaria).
All the post for abroad has to be provided with a “priority” stamp. This means, for a 20 g letter, an additional charge of 21 cents. Whether the delivery with “priority” will be fasterr, only time will tell.

Customs authority - a new way to communicate with the citizens

The customs authority has just arranged on its homepage a new service for the citizens where questions about duty will get a clear answer within a short time.
In order to use this service, it is necessary to fill in the form in which you briefly describe your problem. Within 8 days, the customs authority answers via email.
On the homepage of the customs authority, you find with a click on “Ufficio telematico per le relazioni con il pubblico” the form and further information on the subject.

LOTTERY

NKL-Norddeutsche Klassenlotterie: pay attention to the bill

On the telephone, the NKL offers to consumers the purchase of lots. Most of the consumers only ask for the sending of more detailed information, they get however sent the lot certificate with a “bill” (Rechnung).
Some people pay the deposit immediately, being of the opinion to have agreed to the purchase of this lot by mistake already on the telephone.
According to the conditions of the NKL, the sending of the lot certificate merely constitutes an offer. Only when paying the sum, a contract arises between the consumer and the NKL, and only then the consumer takes part in the draw.
However, if you don’t pay the accounted sum of the “bill”, the offer expires.
